Minutes of the 6 December 1998 Meeting

[Note: These submissions appear on the May 1999 LoAR]

Notes and Announcements

Crescent reiterated that he is soliciting comments on the restructuring of the Caidan College's ranking system. This will involve the removal of the rank of Pursuivant Extraordinary and lowering the bar for the title of Pursuivant.

Today is the Christmas Party.

A reminder, new forms are required next month and any submission on the old forms will necessarily be returned for re-submission on the new forms. Due to problems with incorrectly filled out name forms, Crescent wishes to clarify how they are to be done correctly. In particular, the first line is reserved for the name that the submission will be filed under. In most instances this will be the proposed new name. The next lines is specifically for second names only, i.e., alternate persona names, in which case the alternate name will be filed under the first registered name. If there was a previously submitted name returned by Kingdom or Laurel that the submitter wishes to correct, then they should put the corrected name on the first line, then indicate what the previous submission was on the line "Name previously submitted but not registered". If they have a previously registered name that they wish to release, they should fill in the first line with the new name, check "Primary" for Name Type, and "Change" for Action Type, while in the "Name documentation..." area indicate what their previous name was and what their desire is for the fate of the old name. By default the old name will be released. One last possibility If the submitter wishes to register a new primary name while retaining the old, then they must put the new name on the first line and indicate that they wish to keep the old as an alternate persona name in the "Name documentation..." area.

A few comments from Aurum Many thanks to those who helped at Queen's Champion. She also humbly apologizes for her lack of humor on that day. Second, the new Marshall's Handbook will be coming out at Twelfth Night. A new regulation we will be required to remove all blades before entering the field even though we will not be on the field during combat. Finally, new T-shirts will be available for Great Western War. See her for details.

The following submissions were considered

Altavia, Barony of

Ann Travers of Amberlye (New name and device)

Vert, a hand in benediction and a chief Or semy of dragonflies vert

Name:

Ann is found in Withycombe on pg. 25 under the heading of the same spelling.

Travers is found in Reaney and Wilson, pg. 453, under the heading Travers, specifically Ann Travis or Travers 1578.Amberlye is found in Reaney and Wilson, pg. 10, under the heading Amberley where Robert de Amberlye is dated to 1296.

Device:
This is being returned for redraw as it is impossible to clearly tell if this is a chief or a per fess division. We are also recommending to the submitter that the semy would be better if the dragonflies were fewer and larger.

NAME APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL
DEVICE RETURNED FOR REDRAW

Karina de Elephantide (laurel appeal name)

Name:
The submitter's name is currently registered as Carina de Elephantide. She wishes Laurel to reconsider her original submission where Karina was spelled with a "k." The submitter has provided a variety of examples which support the variation of "C" to "K" within period for classical names, and in particular notes the dual use of Carissimus / Karissimae which is derived from the same linguistic root as Carina / Karina. See the submitter's included documentation.

NAME APPEAL SENT TO LAUREL

Sarah Croft (Resub name and device kingdom)

Argent, on a pile inverted throughout azure between two stags combatant proper, a mullet argent

Name:

The submitter's previous submission, Sarah-Jeanne Winterton Croft, was returned by Kingdom (12/97) for non-period construction. We are returning the submission because we cannot document the hyphenated form of the name or the accented Jeanne and the submitter does not allow changes.

Sarah is found in Withycombe, pg. 263-264, under the heading Sara(h). Croft is found in Reaney and Wilson, pg. 177, under the heading of the same spelling. It is dated to 1361.

Device:
This is close to the badge of the Barony of Dreiburgen (Caid 3/82), Argent, on a pile inverted throughout azure a tower argent. There is a CD for the addition of the secondaries and a CD for the change in type alone of the tertiary as this is simple armory according to RfS. x.4.j.ii.b; we consider the "difference" in posture of the stags not to be significant in the context of this rule.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Thomas Wynne (New name and device)

Vert, on a chevron between three Tygers sejant argent, three caltrops purpure

Name:
Thomas is found in Withycombe, pg 279-280, dated to 1086 a.d. Wynne is found in Bardsley, pg. 832, under the heading Wynn dated to 1586 in this spelling.

Angels, Barony of

Alexander Baird (New personal badge)

[Fieldless] A wake knot palewise within and conjoined to a mascle sable

Name:
The submitter's name was registered by Laurel 9/88.
Device:
The submitter's registered device incorporates this particular depiction of a Wake knot. We note that this is clear of [Tinctureless] A wake knot (important non-SCA armory). There is a CD for the addition of the mascle and a CD between tinctureless and fieldless. This is also clear of [Tintureless] A Bouchier knot (important non-SCA armory) for the same reasons as stated above.

BADGE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Briget Lucia Mackenzie (kingdom resubmission device)

Per bend purpure and Or, a cross of St. Bridget and a castle counterchanged

Name:
The submitter's name was registered by Laurel in Jan, 1998.

Elva Mac Askil (New name and device)

Argent, a brown mouse rampant proper and in chief an oak branch fesswise vert

Name:
Elva is found in Woulfe, pg. 205, under the heading Ailve. It is cited as an anglicization of the Irish Gaelic name Ailbhe. +Mac Askil is found in Reaney & Wilson on pg. 290 in this spelling under the heading Macasgill. It is dated to 1311.
Device:
It has been suggested to the submitter that if she really intends the charge in chief to be an "oak" branch then it would be a good idea to add some acorns.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Hawken of the Greenbriar (Reblazon of device)

Per bend sinister sable and purpure, a bend sinister gules fimbriated between a tower and an eagle argent

Name:
The submitter's name was registered by Laurel 2/91
Device:
The submitter's original device, Per bend sinister sable and purpure, a bend sinister gules fimbriated between a tower and a hawk displayed, wings inverted, argent was registered by Laurel 2/91.He wishes to have the device reblazoned as it was his intent to have the charge in base be an eagle and Laurel at the time blazoned it as a hawk, apparently believing it to be a cant on his name. He has submitted a new emblazon on which (in addition to doing a better job of drawing the bend) he attempts to draw a more identifiable eagle, in case the previous emblazon must be blazoned as a hawk.

DEVICE REBLAZON APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Dreiburgen, Barony of

Wolfgang Neuschel der Grau (kingdom resubmission device)

Azure, three sackbuts inverted within a bordure argent

Name:
The name was forwarded to Laurel in Oct. 1998
Device:
This armory is clear of Azure, three bugle horns argent (of Wyrley), and Azure, three bugle horns... (of Dale), both from Papworth's on page 951.

DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Gyldenholt, Barony of

Rowan Killian (kingdom resubmission)

Per bend sable and azure, a griffin segreant, on a chief argent a double-headed eagle displayed between two crescents sable

Device:
The previous submission conflicted with Sable, a griffin segreant and on a chief argent three fleurs-de-lys sable (Aodhnait inghean mhic Chárthaigh, 05/98). We note that the current submission is still not clear as the change of type of tertiaries is not enough to provide a second CD as these arms do not fall under the rules regarding Simple Armory.

DEVICE RETURNED FOR CONFLICT

Heatherwyne, Shire of

Heatherwyne, Shire of (new badge)

[Fieldless] Issuant from an anvil sable, three sprigs of heather proper

Device:
We note the existence of the arms Argent, a sprig of heather palewise vert surmounted by a single-horned anvil sable which is registered to the same shire. We also note the badge A rose atop an anvil sable owned by the Barony of Blackstone Mountain, in Aethelmaerc. There is a CD for "Fieldless", and we believe there is a CD for a change from one rose to a sprig of heather.

BADGE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Naevehjem, Barony of

Muirgheal inghean Sheumais (Resub name Laurel, New Primary Armory)

Argent, three escallops azure and on a chief sable an arrow point to dexter argent

Name:
Muirgheal is found in Ó Corráin & Maguire, pg. 141, cited as being the wife of the King of Leinster who died in 854 a.d. inghean is Irish Gaelic for "daughter of." Sheumais is the genitive Scots-Gaelic form of James. It is found in Black, pg. 719 under the heading Seumas. We believe that this is clear of Muirgheal ni Sheanachain with a visual difference of the surname as well as an aural difference.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Starkhafn, Barony of

Starkhafn, Barony of: Radiance of Starkhafn (new order name and badge)

Sable, a candle issuant from a sconce argent lit proper

Order Name:
Radiance as a noun is documentable to 1601 in All's Well by Shakespeare, and to 1605 King Lear ibid (referenced in "OED" under radiance). The Order of Silence (Cardinale, Hyginus Eugene, Orders of Knighthood, Awards and the Holy See Van Duren, unk.) appears to justify this form of an Order name, although the use of an abstract noun appears uncommon at best. Some form of designator, e.g., "Order of" is required with an order name. While Crescent would not return the name for this reason, but would normally merely add the designator, this is being returned for administrative reasons, the submitter should be aware of the requirement for a designator.
Badge:
We believe this is clear of Sable, a candle enflamed and environed of a laurel wreath proper (Myrkfaelinn, Dominion of, 12/75) for the removal of the laurel wreath, and for the addition of the sconce. We are also unclear of the color of the candle in the Myrkfaelinn arms and request that Laurel examine them and correct the blazon to remove confusion. While the specific form of the flame proper as used here is contrary to current usage in the College of Arms, it is similar to the form used in the arms of the submitting Barony and therefore we believe it is covered by the Grandfather clause. By default the sconce should have a handle but we do not believe that it is an essential element.

NAME RETURNED FOR LACK OF SIGNATURE, BADGE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Starkhafn, Barony of: Sparkes of Starkhafn, The Order of the (new order name and badge )

Per chevron azure estencelé argent, and sable, a chevron within a bordure argent

Order Name:
Sparks of Starkhafn: We have added the necessary element of the designator The Order of the. The "OED" shows sparkes with the "e" dated from 1384 meaning a small particle of fire. In addition "Reaney" shows the use of Sparkes in 1301 on page 419 under Spark.

NAME AND BADGE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

[Fieldless] A wolf passant reguardant paly Or and gules

Name:
The submitter's name was registered 3/89

BADGE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Claryce of Manchester (new name)

Name:
Claryce is the submitter's mundane middle name. We have found a form with the spelling Clarice in Withycombe, page 67, apparently derived from Clara and datable to as early as 1199. Manchester is a city in England. Ekwall uses this spelling in the header on page 312, though the period spelling is Manchestre dated to 1330.

NAME APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Ioanna Rudrig (Kingdom resubmission)

Or, three weeping willow branches of three subbranches proper

Device:
We have found a potential conflict in Papworth's Ordinary Argent, three trees vert belonging to the families Bross, Sherley, and Shirley, but we do not believe that they warrant addition to the list of protected armories.
