Notes and Announcements
Meeting called to order at 11:20.
Crescent would like to invite territoral heralds to bring their regalia to
GWW, and at some court yet to be determined, to process in a Pelican ceremony.
Please join Crescent as he gets the bird. The exact court will be known before
the event, we hope.[Late breaking news: it's currently scheduled for Grand
Court, Saturday morning at 9:30.]
We have received the 8/1999 LoAR. Laurel commented on the standard she will
use to protect mundane arms. She will use some combination of the importance of
the person and the importance of the arms. She also discusses the use of mixed
languages, "There are 4 categories of mixed-language names." See the
LoAR for details.
The next KWHS will be in Houston, TX. There is a new roster, and a new
address for changes to the roster.
There is a new rules letter. There are three proposed rule changes. See the
LoAR for details. Commentary on proposed changes is invited. It will most
likely be posted to the Laurel web site when the LoAR is posted there.
The war herald for GWW III wants volunteers for consulting and crying the
camp. Crescent heartily encourages you to volunteer.
Coronation and Queen's Champion are in Heatherwine. If you need crash space
contact Jeanne Marie.
The College's CIO, Lord Christopher Thomas, is forming a computer committee
to explore how we can best use computing resources within the college. He is
asking that anyone interested contact him at nomad@castle.org.

- A furison is fire steel, a common tool which accompanies a flint
for starting a fire. See figure 309 in the [Bruce Draconarius of Mistholme,
and Akagawa Yoshio; (1992) ]. The Compact OED Pg 1097 dates to 1536 'the
flint and furison.'

The submitter's previous name submission, Battista Kie De
Lagos, was returned by Laurel for inappropriate capitalization of the
particle De (The submitter did not allow even minor changes). The
submitter has corrected the errant capitalization and taken Laurel's
suggestion that the name would be more authentic without the inclusion of
Kie.
Battista is found in [De Felice, Emidio; (1986) , page 73] under
Battisti. Lagos is a city in the Algrave province of Portugal dating
from the 14th century in [Seltzer, L. E.; (1952) , page 1007] as a favorite
residence of Prince Henry the Navigator.
The submitter has been advised that Battista is a masculine
name.

this is clear by X.2 due to the change between a pegasus and a demi-horse
being a substantial change.

Laurel previously declined to specify the charges as lucys and tigers given
the emblazon. The submitter has redrawn the emblazon to make the charges
clearly what she intends.
Crescent realizes that the default position for a lucy is haurient, but
feels it should be blazoned specifically.

- Sigmund may be found in [Bahlow, Hans; (1993) page 524] under
Siegmund. It is dated to the Niebelunglied. Svertingsson is
the correct patronymic for Svertingr, which is found in [Geirr Bassi
Haraldsson; (1977) , page 15]. We note that Sigmundr is found in
GierBassi on page 14. While the name would be more authentic in old Norse to
retain the "r", since Sigmund is the normal Anglicized version of
the name and is documentable in German, we are forwarding it in the submitted
spelling.

- We note to the artist that the lion's head should be drawn larger with the
tongue smaller, and the spear thicker.

is what the submitter desires. Note that there will be a conflict if the
bird's head is changed to dexter.

undated in this spelling. The name is also discussed by Arval Benicoeur at http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/problemnames/aidan.html,
in "Concerning the Names Aidan, Aédhán, Aodh, and the
Like"
"The name was only very occasionally used outside Ireland.
We have found only one very early example in Scotland, a king of Argyll who
lived around 600 AD [2]. The name also appears in 8-10th century Welsh
records as Aidan or Aedan, in Cornwall in an Anglo-Saxon context as Ae?an,
and in other Anglo-Saxon records as Æthan [1, 6, 7]."
MacBain is found in [Black, George F.; (1946) , page 457],
undated in this spelling. The earliest version noted dates to 1638. The

A quatrafoil knot. Crescent feels that the space within the knot is
equivalent to voiding, and gives a CD.
Crescent cites Medwed Janos 8/98, Vert fretty Or, a
quatrafoil argent. Fretty is not a field treatment, therefore this gets
one CD for the fretty (LoAR 11/92 cover letter), and one for change in
tincture of the field.

From Papworth Stokes of Ireland Per pale vert and argent a chevron
counterchanged. While there is an Irish Stokes listed in Webster's
Biographical, the difference in the dates of the sources between the two
entries show that they do not seem to be connected. We do not feel that there
is sufficient grounds to protect these arms.

under Honor. verch is the Welsh feminine patronymic. Llwyd
is modern Welsh spelling of Lloyd, and is also found in [Withycombe,
E. G.; (1977) , page 197]. Bryneirian appears to be a plausible
Welsh construction using the elements bryn = hill, and eirian =
bright, beautiful. The latter element is asserted by the submitter's
online documentation (by Alan Terlep, ximinez@umich.edu, for the Academy of
St. Gabriel, June 14, 1996, but we cannot verify it with our The New
