Angels, Barony of

Ian MacClennan (New Name and Device)

Per bend argent and azure, a lion gules collared and chained, sustaining a sun between its forepaws Or

Name:
The submitter cares about the sound of the name. The submitter documents "Ian" from http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/symonFreser/scottish14/scottish14_given.html [now here], 13th and 14th Century Scottish Names, where it is listed as a modern form (submitter has attached a printed copy of the web page). Gold Phoenix and Crescent note that providing documentation that explicitly shows the name as being modern begs the question of why this name should be considered acceptable for SCA use. Fortunately, "Ian" has been ruled SCA compatible, a ruling affirmed by Laurel Elspeth, in the LoAR of 9/99 (sub Ian Marcaiche). "MacClennan" is found in [Black, p. 470], but be undated and under "MacLean", found on p. 536 of the same source. Note that both "Ian" and "MacClennan" are Anglicized, and therefore this has only one weirdness (for the SCA compatible given name). Crescent notes a potential conflict with "Ian MacClen" (registered Nov 91, Calontir). Since the issue is whether "MacClen" is significantly different from "MacClennan", and this is a judgement call, Crescent is forwarding it to Laurel to give the submitter the benefit of the doubt.
Device:

There is an issue with whether the sun is a maintained or sustained charge (i.e. is the sun "negligible" or of "comparable size" (Laurel Bruce, LoAR of Jul 92, p. 6). Based on considerable discussion at the Chapter meeting, it appears to Crescent that this charge is not negligible, and therefore is a sustained charge, counting for difference. Note that if this is not the case, this is in conflict with Argent a lion rampant gules (Leon, important non-SCA arms, Dec 94) and Barry argent and azure, a lion rampant, queue-forchy gules, crowned Or (Luxenberg, important non-SCA arms, Dec 94), and others not cited.

While the field is technically neutral (being divided evenly of a color and a metal), it is important that the emblazon of the sun not be predominantly on the argent part of the field. This is not an issue if the per bend division is correctly drawn and the sun is placed essentially on the line of division.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Ingilborg Sigmundsdóttir (New Name and Device)

Azure, two wolves courant Or

Name:

The submitter will not accept major changes.

"Ingilborg" is a feminine Old Norse name of Christian origin, found in [Geirr Bassi, p. 12]. [Lind, vol 4, column 624] documents the name in this spelling to 1276. Sigmundsdóttir" is an Old Norse patronymic, based on the man's name "Sigmundr", found in [Geirr Bassi, p. 14] and [Lind, vol 6, col 881], the latter of which dates the name to 1310. The form is constructed based on the rules found in [Geirr Bassi, p. 17].

Device:
Crescent notes for the benefit of members of the Caidan College that it is quite appropriate for the two charges to be of different sizes to fill the available space; on another shape (e.g. a rectangular banner), the two charges would probably be drawn of equivalent size.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Calafia, Barony of

Andreu Fayrfax (New Name and Device)

Azure, in pale a cloud argent and an eagle displayed facing sinister Or

Name:

Andreu is from Withycombe, page 23, under Andrew, dated to 1273. Fairfax and Fayrfex are found in Reaney & Wilson, page 161, dated to 1208 (both for the same gentleman). The submitted spelling is a reasonable variant of these two spellings. The submitter has provided a photocopy of the cover of a classical music CD of choral and recorder works by Robert Fayrfax, d. 1521.

Device:
Conflict with Napoleon, Azure a eagle displayed Or.

NAME APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL
DEVICE RETURNED FOR CONFLICT

Basil Euphonikos (New Name)

Name:

(Submitted as Basil Euphonius)

Basil is found in "Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium", dating to the 7th C. We also found it in Withycombe, page 43, dated to the 12th C in England. The submitter intended Euphonius to mean "good sounding" in Byzantine Greek. We note that the English usage of the word euphonia (noun) dates to 1591. We found euphonikos uphonikos (adj., "pretty sounding") in Divry's "Modern English-Greek & Greek-English Desk Dictionary", page 518. We have found a number of Byzantine names in Webster's Biographical which are composed of a prenom plus a descriptive byname, e.g. Demetrios Eukairos ("unoccupied, good-timer"); Constantine Pogonatus ("bearded"); Constantine Monomachus ("fights single combat"), d. 1055. So, to fulfill the submitter's desire for a name meaning "Basil, the one who sounds good", we are changing the spelling of the descriptive byname to the Greek form. If this name is not acceptable to the College, the submitter has approved the alternate surname of Euphronius. Both Basil and Euphronius were found on the Byzantine names page on Laurel's website - http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/byzantine/PLRE_masc_names.html.

NAME APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Eanswyth de Burthoswald (New Name and Device)

Per fess embattled azure and argent, two crosses bottony argent and a raven sable

Name:
Lura Maureen of Burthoswald was registered by Laurel in Sept 91. The submitter wishes to register a new primary name. Eanswyth is found in "Oxford Dict. of Saints", page 146. de Burthoswald is found under Birdoswald in Ekwall, page 45.
Device:
No conflicts.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Elena de Beaumont (New Name)

Name:
Alix de Beaumont was registered by Laurel in April '96. The submitter wishes to register a new primary name.Elena is found in Talan's "Yorkshire Names", dated to 1379, and Talan's "Feminine Given Names in a Dictionary of Given Names" [KWHS Trimaris, A.S. 29] p. 95, dated to 1187. de is the Norman French locative preposition. Beaumont is found in Reaney, page 35, (undated) where the author indicates that it is the name of at least 5 regions/towns in Normandy.

NAME APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Liuete Liana da Luna (New Name and Device)

Per pale azure and purpure, a cross of Calatrava, on a chief argent a decrescent azure between two mullets purpure

Name:
Liuete is found in Reaney, page 278, under Levet, where the author indicates that the submitted name is a woman's name dated to 1221. Liana is found in De Felice's "Noms", page 230. da is the Italian locative preposition. Luna is found in CLG, page 1096, which cites it as being destroyed in 1015.
Device:
No conflicts found.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Lonán ua Conaill (New Name and Device)

Per pale argent and azure, three triquetras counterchanged

Name:
Lonán is found in OCM, page 124. ua is the early Irish Gaelic patronymic, meaning "descendent of", found in Tangwystl's notes from a class she held at Pennsic XXVI. Conaill is found in Woulfe, page 177, under Connell (we note that the -aill is the genitive ending).
Device:
No conflicts found.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Quinn Phelan (New Name and Device)

Azure, a wolf's head cabossed within three feathers in annulo argent, between three grenades argent flamed proper

Name:
Quinn Phelan is documented in MacLysaght. Quinn is found on page 252 as a Gaelic surname O'Coinne, derived from the Gaelic prenom Conn. The surname is found on page 245, from the prenom Faolan, whose genitive form is Faolaín. We cannot justify the use of Quinn as a given name.
Device:
We were unable to identify most of the charges. The feathers look like leaves and are too small, the head is not recognizable, the grenades should be at the same angle all the way around, and the argent parts should be left white.

NAME RETURNED FOR LACK OF DOCUMENTATION
DEVICE RETURNED FOR UNIDENTIFIABILITY

Theodric FitzRichard (New Name and Device)

Per pale sable and azure, a cross formy within an orle argent

Name:
Theodric Richardson of Dover was approved by Laurel in August '89. The submitter wishes to register a new primary name. Theodric is found in Withycombe, page 278, dated to the Domesday Book. Fitz is the Norman patronymic. Richard is found in Reaney, page 376, dated to 1276. We also found Gilbert Fitz-Richard in Webster's Biographical, page 529, dated to 1115.
Device:
No conflict found, but we found Per pale azure and sable, a cross crosslet fitchy within an orle argent [Owain ap Howell, Jan. '94]. It is clear with one CD for change of type of cross, and one for the change in the field tincture.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Vivien de Maingny (New Name and Device)

Sable, a chevron gules fimbriated between three fleurs de lys, a chief argent

Name:
Vivien de Maingny is documented from "An Index to the Given Names in the 1292 Census of Paris" by Lord Colm Dubh, available both online (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/paris.html) and in KWHS proceedings of June '96, with the given name found under Vivien le serjant surname found under the name Doete de Maingny.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Saint Artemas, College of (Calafia)

Saint Artemas, College of (New Badge)

Vert, two swords between in fess two goblets and a bordure Or

Name:
Saint Artemas was approved by Laurel in August 1988.
Badge:
The swords were not identifiable from across the room, so we are returning the badge to be redrawn.

BADGE RETURNED FOR REDRAW

Darach, Shire of

Eilidh Swann of Strathlachlan (New Badge)

[Fieldless] On a sinister wing sable a crescent Or

Name:
registered 3/94
Badge:
No conflicts found

BADGE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Morgana Isolde of Ander Hall (New Badge)

[Fieldless] On an oak leaf inverted sable in pale three crescents argent

Name:
registered 7/84
Badge:
The submitter is to be instructed to draw the crescents larger (the consulting herald, who was present, says "It shall be done"). No conflicts found.

BADGE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Naevehjem, Barony of

Gregory Morgan (Device Resub)

Or, two natural panthers combattant sable and a bordure vert

Name:
registered 8/95
Device:
This resubmission corrects the problems found with the previous emblazon of this same basic design, which had the panthers in an unblazonable position. No conflicts found.

DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Southron Gaard, Barony of

Michael vomme Harz (New name and device)

Per pale sable and Argent, a pile inverted throughout counterchanged

(this submission was not discussed at the College meeting)

Name:
Submitter includes a Saint Gabriel letter which indicates that 'Michael' is recorded in Silesia in 1379, but the most common spelling in late medieval German would probably be 'Michel'. We find the same information in Bahlow, p. 366, but undated. St Gabriel indicates that a surname meaning 'from the Harz' would most likely be 'vomme Harz'.
Device:
St. Gabriel noted the potential conflict with the SCA armory: Goswin Sterrenkijker van Sint Gillis Waas: Quarterly sable and argent, a pile inverted throughout counterchanged. While it could be argued that there is 1 CD for field difference, as per RfS X.4.a, and possibly 1 CD for difference between a pile inverted quarterly tinctures and a pile inverted per pale same tinctures, per RfS X.4.d., Crescent would then invoke RfS X.5. When the two designs are set side by side, there is an overwhelming visual similarity. Visually the difference appears to be no more than one cadency step.

NAME APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL
DEVICE RETURNED FOR CONFLICT

Tycho Julsø (New Name and Device)

Azure estencelly Or, in pale a smith's hammer bendwise sinister head to base and a single-horned anvil argent

Name:

The submitter cares about the sound of the name.

The submitter takes the name "Tycho" from the 16th C Danish astronomer , providing as documentation a reproduction of a portrait dated to 1586 apparently including in the caption (in the portrait) "Tycho[??] Brahe" (the reproduction of the portrait is difficult to read in the submitter's photocopy). The image is found at http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/tycho/image21a.htm. Tycho Brahe's name is found in [Webster's, p. 185], noting that he lived1546-1601.

The name "Julsø" is asserted to be a family name in the submitter's ancestry, and more importantly, to be a locative surname based on a Danish lake of the same. The name of the lake is asserted to mean "Christmas Lake", from the Danish "Jul" plus "sø". The submitter provides photocopies of what appears to be a modern tour guide of Scandinavia, which shows the lake about 30 km west of Århus, and asks for assistance in demonstrating whether or not the name is period. "Julsø" is also found in [CLG, p. 888]. Like the submitter, we are unable to conclusively document the age of the lake's name.

Device:
It is not completely clear from the emblazon whether the submitter intended to have the hammer conjoined to the anvil. We have blazoned the armory as having two charges, in which case this appears to us to be an acceptable artistic variation, although the submitter should be aware that other artists may draw the device with more separation between the hammer and anvil. No conflicts found.

NAME AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Starkhafn, Barony of

Innocenzio da Gagliano (New Name and Device)

Azure, a lion and in chief three mullets Or

Name:

The submitter will not accept major changes, and will not allow the creation of a holding name. The submitter desires an Italian name dated from 1400-1600. Submitted as "Innocenzio D'Gagliano", the submitter was present at the chapter meeting and approved the change to "Innocenzio da Gagliano".

"Innocènzio" is found in [De Felice (Nomi), p. 212] under the heading "Innocènzo" as a variant spelling. We have omitted the accent mark as a modern pronunciation guide in this source. "da Gagliano" is found in [Webster's, p. 570] under the entry for "Marco da Gagliano", 1575?-1642.

Device:
No conflicts found.

NAME (AS CHANGED) AND DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Shereen al-Maghrebiyya (New Device)

Argent chaussé sable, a goblet sable

Name:
registered 3/00
Device:
There was general comment that this is an outstanding design. We note that there is a CD between a goblet and a tankard, per Laurel Dau'd, LoAR 9/95, p. 7. This makes this submission is clear of Quarterly gules and argent, a tankard sable, (Caitlin óhAodha, Aug 97), with one CD for the field and one for the change in primary charge.

DEVICE APPROVED AND SENT TO LAUREL

Tomás mac Cáel (New name)

Name:
Submitted as "Tómais mac Cael". The submitter desires that his name be authentic for 1450, but does not specify the culture. The intended meaning is Thomas, a descendent of Kyle. "Tomás" is found in [O'Corrain, p. 171] dated to 794. "Tómais" is found in [Black, p. 566], under ACTHOMAS as a patronymic. Since "Tómais" appears to be the genitive form, we are substituting the documented given name, noting that is it documented to a much earlier date. "Cáel" is found in [O'Corrain & Maguire, p. 40]. We have no direct evidence of the formation of a clan name from this, or of the precise spelling of the genitive, however this basic formation appears to follow the general practice. [Black, p. 522] gives "McCael" dated to 1651 and "McCaill" to 1540. [Woulfe, p. 383] shows M'Caele as a variant of MacHaol.

NAME APPROVED (AS CHANGED) AND SENT TO LAUREL

Wintermist, Shire of

Ilia Aleksandrovich (Change of name)

Name:
The submitter is changing his name from "Guillaume Lenfant", registered 4/92, to "Ilia Aleksandrovich". Submitter will not accept major changes, and desires the name to be authentic for 15th C Russian. "Ilia" in this spelling dated to 1392, under the header "Il'ia", is found in [Paul Wickenden of Thanet (3rd ed), p. 119]. "Aleksandrovich" is found in [Paul Wickenden of Thanet (3rd ed.), p. 4] under "Aleksandr". This exact spelling of the patronymic is dated to 1495. The construction follows the discussion in [Paul Wickenden of Thanet (3rd ed.), p. xxiii].
